18 Jathas of the original 65 belonged to the Bhangi Misl.

Before the reorganisation of the 65 Sikh Jathas into 11 Sikh Misls by Nawab Kapur Singh, 18 Jathas and Jathedars belonged to the Bhangis…with one of the Jathas under Sardar Lehna Singh Kahlon!

Here is the list…and you can recognise all the Bhangi Sardars…also, pay homage to these men and their mighty warriors who faced the might of the Mughal and Durrani Empires…and won!

You can see that there was a Jatha under Sardar Hari Singh Dhillon, another under his oldest son Jhanda, another under his younger son Ganda, one under Natha Singh who I think is Gujjar’s father, a Jatha under Gujjar Singh Bhangi who is one of my favourites, another under Gujjar’s brother Nirbahu Singh…to whose son Gujjar assigned Ferozepur and surrounding districts, our Lehna Singh which I assume he inherited from his adopted father Sardar Gurbaksh Singh Sandhu of Village Roranwala…and you will also recognise a recurring pattern with certain villages eg Village Kanha which was mostly Sandhu Jats which also supplied Sardar Sobha Singh Kanhaiya who ruled Lahore with Lehna and Gujjar as well as Sardar Jai Singh Kanhaiya…and also some famous Sikh Martyrs such as Baba Deep Singh Shahid who sacrificed his life fighting the Afghans at the Golden Temple, Amritsar after taking a vow that he would break through the Afghan cordon.

“After the departure of Ahmed Shah Abdali all the Sikhs Sardars with their followers assembled at Amritsar in large numbers for the Baisakhi celebration on March 29th, 1748 and discussed the Panthic agenda. Nawab Kapur Singh moved the resolution that the Panth needed solidarity and should have one strong organization and one leader and Jathedar, who was to be elected by the entire Panth. To take a collective action against the Mughals and Ahmad Shah Abdali, they reconstituted their small Jathas and gave them a more cohesive shape by combining all their fighting units and reorganizing themselves into one strong organization which was given the name Dal Khalsa - the entire fighting body of the Sikhs. Jassa Singh Ahluwalia was unanimously appointed the supreme commander of the Dal Khalsa.123”
